How this fuel cost calculator works

MPG means miles per gallon, which estimates how far a vehicle travels on one gallon of fuel. This calculator uses UK gallons, where one gallon is 4.54609 litres.

UK petrol and diesel prices are normally shown in pence per litre. The calculator converts the journey fuel use into litres, then multiplies that by the price per litre to estimate total cost and cost per mile.

The comparison uses the main fuel price as your current price. If you enter extra miles to use cheaper fuel, the calculator estimates the fuel cost for those added miles.

Example: A 100-mile journey in a car doing 50 MPG costs around £17.45 when fuel is 191.9p per litre.
